Frostproof: A Hidden Gem

Frostproof, located in Polk County, Florida, is a charming city nestled on the Lake Wales Ridge. Here are some key details about this hidden gem:

  • History:

    • The settlement that eventually became Frostproof was established around 1850 as a fort known as Fort Clinch. It was named after the nearby Lake Clinch, which itself honored Seminole War commander Duncan Lamont Clinch.
    • By the 1880s, permanent settlers began arriving, drawn by abundant hunting (deer and turkey) and excellent fishing opportunities.
    • The town’s name was initially Keystone City, but it was later changed to Frostproof as a marketing ploy. The idea was to assure potential landowners that the town had never experienced frost that could harm the citrus-driven economy. Unfortunately, a frost during The Great Freeze of 1895 did damage much of the citrus crop.
    • Joseph Washington Carson suggested the name Frostproof based on the town’s relatively minor damage during the freeze in December 1894.
